A note on Gary Cooper

Have seen three films with Gary Cooper in the last three days and he strikes me as a soulful actor. It’s all in the eyes, which seem to convey all kinds of feeling, and the thickness and length of the eyelashes frame that feeling with a lush complexity. This in play with his mouth, a promise of sensuality. And he’s a whizz with double-takes. Moreover, whether he’s playing a millionaire, painter or mechanic, he manages to evoke All-American average Joe, which takes some doing when you look like that. You might guess I love him.

Edward Yang’s Desire/Expectations

Edward Yang depicts a gaze on a male body that would not become prevalent in American Cinema until at least a decade later, one originating in female desire. The re-edit is from his episode in the omnibus film, In Our Time (1982)
